šŸŽ¬ Rewatching Musicals for the Summer

"Someday you might thank me for this"

ā˜€ļø Happy Saturday June 21st,

It’s officially Summer (no seriously it started yesterday) and Flick has not stopped singing the songs from these films the last couple of days and tbh we’re about to pull his batteries out (joking…ha).

To avoid us doing that, he’s compiled a list of his Top 5 musicals for the summer, and to be honest they’ve got us rolling down the windows to tan our forearms and sing at the top of our lunges…

So, wherever you are on this sunny day celebrating the start of summer, whip out your phone, press play on that playlist, and then find a nice cool spot later in the day to rewatch these films (Flick’s pick is in green)

šŸŽ„ High School Musical (2011)

šŸ€ What happens when the popular basketball star and the nerdy new girl break into song and accidentally rewrite the entire social order of East High?

High School Musical, written by Peter Barsocchini, follows Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) as they defy cliques, audition for the school musical, and remind their classmates that you don’t have to stick to the status quo. What started as a Disney Channel Original Movie became a cultural reset for a generation.

Rather than mocking teenage dreams or leaning into tired stereotypes, High School Musical embraces sincerity, self-expression, and the magic of a perfectly dance scene. It’s not just a teen musical, it’s a story about finding your voice and daring to be break out of the box people put on you.

Director Kenny Ortega (known for Newsies and Hocus Pocus) brought infectious energy to the halls of East High. His background in dance made every number pop, from the angsty basketball choreography of ā€œGet’cha Head in the Gameā€ to the glittery optimism of ā€œWe’re All In This Together.ā€

Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens brought star power and authentic chemistry (seriously though, they started dating after this) to their breakout roles, supported by a scene-stealing cast including Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, and Lucas Grabeel.

Pretty cool huh? Now, here’s some film resources for you as you rewatch…

šŸæ What to eat while watching High School Musical

When you find yourself sitting down to watch this film, make sure to grab the only flying snack that disarms the mean girl of East High, Sharpay Evans...

Sharpay’s ā€œCheese Friesā€

Scream ā€œEEEVERYBOOOOOODY QUUUUUIEEETTTT!ā€ and you might just this snack FOR FREE (in the film it’s accidentally spilled on her let’s be honest ~ anyone talks like that to Flick and he’s throwing something).

Though it’s not in this film, here’s a hilarious kitchen scene from the second installment of this franchise…

Enjoy reasonably.

ā–¶ļø Rewatch-worthy Scene from High School Musical…2

Speaking of second installment: this is a pivotal moment for Troy Bolton and perhaps the most meme-able scene in HSM history. We’re still in awe of just how great Zac Efron is at jumping into sand bunkers…

ā€œBet On itā€

Zac Efron and director Kenny Ortega approached the ā€œBet On Itā€ scene with full-throttle emotion and theatrical flair.

It’s the moment where Troy Bolton hits his breaking point: caught between expectations, pressure, and who he really wants to be. The stakes aren’t a championship or a scholarship…they’re internal, and that makes it hit even harder.

This scene, where Troy sings to himself across a golf course, isn’t just a dramatic solo, it’s the turning point of the entire film.

With dramatic spins, intense stares, and more emotional finger-pointing than most courtroom dramas, the scene has become iconic (and not always for the best reasons). Think Flashdance meets Footloose in a sand trap.

It echoes other personal breaking points in film: Saturday Night Fever’s solo strut, Billy Elliot’s explosive dance in defiance, or even La La Land’s dream-fueled montages. Sometimes the biggest battles aren’t with others - they’re with ourselves, and they need a power ballad and an empty golf course to fully land.
